Activities:Self-regulated market for chartering of ship and sale and purchase of vessels for members of The Exchange
The Baltic Exchange, headquartered in London with offices in Athens, Singapore and Shanghai, provides a suite of services to support members in their shipping and freight derivative activities. These include: Licence to use market data in contracts and legal hearings; The Baltic Exchange is the only source of independent maritime market data and publishes daily shipping benchmarks and rates used across global markets. Baltic information covers; dry cargo, tanker, gas, ship sale and purchase and demolition markets as well as dry and wet forward rates that underpin the freight derivative markets. Daily fixture list and market report; The Baltic captures daily dry cargo fixtures, publishing specific examples of concluded trades. Each catalogued trade is made available for analysis in the Baltic’s expansive database, containing over 70,000 entries. The end of day report summarises the day’s market shifts and gives further news on market activity sourced from an international network of participants. Freight and commission recovery service; without charge, the Baltic returns over $100,000 USD per month (2017) in outstanding monies owed to members. Legal and compliance services; the Baltic’s Code of Conduct, summarised by the motto ‘Our Word, Our Bond’, is adopted industry-wide as the compliance standard for market practice and is regularly quoted at arbitration and court hearings. Entities that breach the Code are ‘posted’ on a list of high-risk counterparts. This alerts members to avoid trade with the company in breach and exercise caution in any related business dealings. The Baltic network of members is spread across 45 countries bringing together all elements of commercial shipping and maritime services including; chartering, freight derivatives, legal, insurance, technology, finance, classification societies and consultants. All Baltic members commit to trade ethically, abiding by the Baltic code and this reassurance is indispensable for many businesses when negotiating with counterparts. Members are invited to 40 annual events in all major shipping centres and are able to join any of the 15 Baltic sports and social clubs in London, Singapore and Shanghai to socialise regularly or take part in Sailing, Golf, Football, Tennis, Rugby, Cricket, Wine Tasting, Go Karting and other club pursuits.
